We have subsequently learned that the sale of the land has not been fully completed.
The potential sale was brokered behind closed doors and after Clonkeen College had spent almost €700,000, with the full knowledge and permission of the Christian Brothers and their trustees, the Edmund Rice Schools Trust (ERST), on significant infrastructural ground works to level and improve drainage of the playing field.
The school has also incurred substantial maintenance costs since completing the newly upgraded playing field. The money invested in the playing field was raised through years of fundraising by the school and matched with grant aid from the Department of Education, all of which will go to waste if the sale is completed.
This potential sale was negotiated in spite of assurances that had been given to the school by the Christian Brothers in 2006 that the playing field would remain part of the school, for as long as the school was in existence.
There is huge support against the sale from Staff, Pupils, Past Pupils, Past Board of Management members, Families and Friends of Clonkeen. Appeals directly to the Congregation of Christian Brothers to withdraw from this deal have been ignored, and political and rezoning avenues have so far proven unproductive.
After much consultation and having taken legal advice, seven individuals, made up of teachers, parents and past students have been left with no other option other than taking the extraordinary step of taking a joint High Court action to enforce the agreement made between the congregation and the school.
As friends of Clonkeen College we must support the brave actions of the seven, and raise urgent funds to support the legal costs, which unfortunately will be significant.
Your support is vital… We cannot let them take on this burden alone.
This website has been launched to keep all Clonkeen College’s friends up to date with the situation as it evolves, clear up some misinformation and support the fundraising efforts for legal costs.
